Sneaks on sneaks. Pretty much sums it up.

Years ago painting on objects was the art-curatorial trend du jour.

I was asked to paint on skateboards (for Hit the Deck at Subliminal Projects in LA, Decked out at Culture Cache in SF, and No Damn Good at Alena in Montreal), or on Converse (for the traveling Sneaker Pimps show that touched down in Greenpoint and then made its way across Europe), and even on a pair of ladies underpants for a feminist art show. Suffice to say, I was on a roll for a couple of years there.

Well, I’m back in the game again. This time it’s painting on Toms for Movember. Thankfully, the concept feels fresh again.
It’s really nice to do work that’s self directed and the work I’m creating benefits a non-profit supporting prostate cancer research and awareness.

Here is the first pair. Definitely a work in process.

I began by using fabric markers and quickly switched gears and coated the shoes in gesso and tried my hand at acrylic paint.

I have six pairs to play with and three will make their way to Toronto, LA, and NYC. I’ll post the final versions soon enough!

For the last few years I’ve been exploring pattern and repetition when I create personal work. First it was a total obsession with enamel paintings of Islamic and Scandinavian textiles for my patchwork quilt series. Then it was origami paper cut outs covered in resin for Tokion Magazine’s show at Cinders Gallery. I’ve been painting again but now it’s been in the form of backdrops for fashion editorials. The Refinery29 swimwear story I created with James has been my favorite.

I’m once again diving in and manipulating patterns but this time utilizing my old high school standby: collage.

I’ve been cutting up my own paintings, xeroxes of my work, and print outs of my remixed Kuba and Mud cloth or Op Art patterns I’ve culled from Ebay and the internet.

I’m working on several fun projects… shirts for Roxy & Ford, a music video pitch for Ladytron, work for Casemate, and huge paintings that will function as backdrops for a fashion editorial shoot this coming Thursday. The following images show my work in progress from today. The images come from vintage wallpaper with colors that I’ve reworked, projected, and am now painting on a very large scale. As in 9 feet by 9 feet. I am trying to make sure these read as paintings and not as wallpaper, so drips and loose interpretations are key.

A very pale blonde haired model wearing summer florals and white will soon be standing in front of my backdrops. Hoping it turns out!

It’ll be as if I’m entering the biggest coloring contest of all time!

Pearl Paint was out of Pebeo’s Vitrail (a solvent-based transparent painting material for working on glass. Very artsy crafty sun catcher making stuff).

So I bought my paints online. Currently waiting waiting waiting for them to arrive.
Frustrating.

The next few pieces are going to look like stained glass.
One or two will be illuminated with lightboxes so they glowwwww.
Or at least that is my intention.

Each day I play around with Photoshop, trying to create interesting digital collages that integrate patterns and overlapping colors and figures. Goal: work that is less cute. Don’t think I’ve found my groove but I’m just happy to experiment and avoid an artistic rut.

Last night’s work:

I’m working on a “Space is the Place” themed painting. Acrylic on plexi glass; tried using florescent paints but they weren’t giving me adequate coverage.

Next piece will be with watercolor or something transparent. I’m interested in seeing the colors overlap. I”m thinking along the lines of the kindergarten art project of making stained glass out of various colored tissue paper squares and glue.

Here is the sketch. At first I couldn’t decide between dayglo pink or blue.

Obviously, I ended up going with blue.

I’m brainstorming for an upcoming New York solo show. More landscapes, more people, more patterns. But trying to take it in a new direction. Not sure where it’s going but hopefully into outer space.

Working backwards; before I even have any images I bought new paint. I’ll be using these colors. There are five fluorescent colors that don’t want to show up when scanned. Picture them in your minddddd
