Kenyan and I first met about six years ago when he was working at The Apartment, in Soho. I had my first exhibition of my artwork in their store windows and he hung the whole thing. Flash forward, and he is now the go-to guy for rustic prop styling– notable for the amazing aesthetic of  Earnest Sewn and The Smile.

His and Grace’s house in Upstate NY, has been featured on The Selby. And for good reason. It is NEXT LEVEL. Straight out of a movie.  There are like six bedrooms, each with its own array of curiosities and antiques. There is even a stable and barn. It’d be an amazing place to have a wedding, do a catalog or editorial photo shoot, or they could start their own bed and breakfast. Obviously, I like that idea.

While we were upstate, our gang of merry pranksters also made it up to the Renaissance Faire in nearby Tuxedo, NY. Lots of fat alterna-goths and families. It felt less magical than the one in Novato, CA. I guess 20 years of awareness will do that to you. Regardless, it was still fun dressing up in my 1905 lace wedding dress.

The weekend was amazing. At night we roasted s’mores, each meal was delicious: pancakes and barbecue and grilled burgers, flashlight tag, racing scooters and bikes in the field, photo shoots, dance parties in the barn, dueling in vintage medieval costume and handmade swords, karaoke.

These photos are a mix of ones I took and ones James took:

Two fridays ago Ami invited James and me to join Coolhunting on a sailing trip around the city. I’d never been on a sailboat before, nor had I ever seen Manhattan from the water. It was spectacular. Perfect weather, setting sail at sunset, free champagne and a Pimms Cup or two. Fancy times.
James took all these photos. You can see more here.

A few months ago I moved studios. I no longer share with Rebecca Turbow and her growing fashion entourage. No hate, just sayin. Now, when I’m not at Brand New School, I’m a few blocks away above one of my favorite vintage stores, 10 ft Single by Stella Dallas and near Union Pool (which I never seem to go to anymore).

I’m sharing with Chris Palazzo, whom most days I actually see at BNS, not the studio. He’s a motion graphics art directing wizard of sorts. Here is an homage to his wackiness. Soon I’ll post photos of our huge new digs.

There has been a whole lot of crafternooning and craft discussions going on in these parts. I think the dour economy is inspiring my friends and encouraging us to stay home, make something with ones hands, hang with friends and not have to spend a million dollars going out to bars and screaming loudly. Andddddd be indoors where it is warm.

My last few craft-attempts have involved covering things in punk studs. A leather handbag, black wool coat, cashmere scarf. I bought a Bedazzler recently and I’m going to try and see how that goes.

This weekend there is likely another crafting session on the horizon. If it’s not punk studs perhaps I will make an edible craft? A craft using wood slabs and string art? Something with tissue paper (notecards? a picture frame?) Or weird dolls?

Here are some inspiring 1970s craft images from flickr and Martha Stewart. (links below)

Last night my friend and old studio mate, Rebecca Turbow, had her Fall 09 presentation. It was her biggest collection to date and the event was a total success, building on the momentum from last season’s Bowery Electric showing.

Usually I’m in the thick of all the preparations, the fittings, the drama; but now that I’ve moved out of our hectic studio, I got to experience everything like the rest of the audience. It was so nice to see her collection as a total surprise.

She’s showed a lot of party dresses in rich fabrics, grey and black (yessss!) blouses, wool coats and swingy capes, well-tailored slacks, menswear, and some interesting jewelry and distinctive hair accessories. Super wearable, very cute, I will own a few most definitely.

It all took place at the Moeller Snow gallery, on Bond street. Totally packed full of friends and really cute kids. Unfortunately my camera’s battery died, so I only have documentation by other people.

That is some epic chain headgear ala Yokoo. Although, I’m certain Rebecca has no clue who she is.

Unfortunately, the boys’ looks are lost over there in the corner

Oh, look who it is. That’s Andrew next to me, thinking, “halp! don’t do this to me!”

Dude. It was Packed the entire time! I am so proud.

The City

I am grabbing a gaggle of ladies and we are going to have a tv party tonight. Whitney Port lives next door to my sister and I’m hoping her apartment, and perhaps Alisa, makes a cameo. OOooOOoOo!!!

My friend Laura djs at the weirdest place in Tribecca every so often. The night was filled with oddly dressed characters out of Smithereens and total Wall Street types. The drinks were free… until they weren’t and then somehow three beverages cost us fifty. The highlight of the night was our discovery of the mind-trippy mirror near the bathroom. Phootshoot enused.

Yesterday I single handedly supported the US economy (four sample sale purchases at Steven Alan and What Goes Around Comes Around. I am weak)

Then Leti and I visited Celia’s neighborhood to have dinner at Sam Buffa and Jean Adamson’s new restaurant Vinegar Hill House next to their apartment. The space is temporary byob, so we got two bottles of wine delivered, coincidentally all ordered the char with black quinoa, had some fancy meat and cheese plate, brussel sprouts, and sampled both deserts. Delicious!

It’s opening week and so most of the patrons seemed like neighbors or affiliated with Jean’s old restaurant Freeman’s. Celia seemed to know everyone and we hung out for hours, meeting kids, talking to friends and lots of girl talk.

Then Celia let us take our pick of her overflowing drawers of promotional beauty products. I made out like a bandit and scored all this Chanel, YSL, Lipstick Queen, and other fancies.

Total Fox

I bring you newly minted model Rachel Ballinger. First brought to my attention last year when I stumbled into her Bushwick house party and she was rocking the most insanely bright pink lipstick that nobody else could pull off.

She’s the girl in the new Opening Ceremony and Rebecca Turbow look books. And she looks so good.  There are tons of party pix featuring her on Kathy Lo’s website (think the Cobrasnake but all NY kids). Here are some I like best.

I would like this jacket please. And not the pleather version at Urbn.

Next Coat

All last year I was decked out in one of Rebecca’s samples. A black wool swing coat that garnered compliments whenever I wore it. I think it’s time to be retired and move on to this gray number. It originally was to have a patterned lining that is visible if you roll the cuffs and button them. But due to retarded factory mishaps, it’ll now be a nice white cotton. Lucky for me, I like white better. It makes it seem crisp and cleeeeeean.

Here’s a sneak peak of some of Rebecca Tubow’s Spring 09 collection. No more turquoise, this collection is all pale yellow and shades of gray.  Sasha and Jennifer were shot by Tom Hines at Alex Keith’s mom’s apartment on the Upper East Side. Fancy times.

Thursday my studio mate and friend, Rebecca, is having a presentation for her spring collection at Bowery Electric. That’s Lesley and Greg’s 90’s Night “Loser.” Hopefully it will be epic because it’s certainly been a lot of work to arrange. I got in trouble with my landlord for helping shoot this postcard. Rushing to get them printed (black ink on metallic paper), she’s been struggling to find liquor sponsors and models for the event, and trying to do everything for free or cheappppp.

here are the event’s deets: turbow presentation

But it’s starting to come together. Leo Fitzpatrick will be djing, and she has all this rad custom candy that PapaBubble gave her and some other goodie’s like Carlen’s Jewish Rosaries. We’ll seeeeeee

It’s 2 am and I just finished up an assignment. On my way to the bathroom at the end of our studio’s hall I encounter my neighbors, door ajar, topless, and slaying dragons. YOU GUYS!

Micachu

Rebecca has been looking for tracks for her upcoming collection’s new video. She passed along Micachu tonight as a possible option. I have to admit, I’m totally feeling this. Who thinks this is the next big glitchy-Lily Allen-Lykke Li-Julie Ruin-Yacht-thing? I do.

My carpenter and I met through mutual friends sometime last year. Stefan has since built us shelves, a desk, a storage system for my paintings, and most recently, a fancytime lightbox for my impending plexiglass pattern series.

He recently proposed a commission; I’m to create a painting memorializing his soon-to-be-vacated apartment.

James and I visited his live/work loft a few days ago and documented all the details. The walls are haphazardly painted blue, a giant jagged red stained glass partition separates his work area, and custom built-ins assembled from a crumbled watertower, house African figurines, a lofted bed, and dozens of art books and small artifacts. It’s quite a unique space, ripe with character and detail. After I figure out a composition, I’ll start drawing creepy tigers, quirky vignettes, and outsider art. Quite a fun trade.

I met Arielle de Pinto the second time I visited my friend Matt in Montreal. Last summer was spent at Middlebury College in Vermont, at an insane language immersion program, so spending time in Canada with both a well needed break and also a chance to practice my French.

We visited Arielle at her studio and home, and both times she was working on her crocheted projects; a series of chain-mail inspired Gothic masks and her woven spiderweb necklaces. We had planned a trade, but after I saw her pieces at Lambs Ear, in Seattle, I’m feeling impatient. I’m going to buy one when she returns from Berlin and joins us in NYC. Can’t. Wait. They’re so rad.

This weekend, we rented a zipcar and piled in a few friends and headed to Robert Moses beach, near Fire Island. James’ friends met us there and soon we had quite a crew offering fancy snacks, sun umbrellas, and volleyball games. As an ex-Californian, it’s odd it was literally the first time I’d put more than my feet in the ocean. Oh, wait, it’s salty. No duh.

After snacks and a bit of reading Young Sleek and Full of Hell, we trekked to Midwood, Brooklyn to try New York’s “best pizza” at Di fara’s. It was an unreasonably long wait because the owner painstakingly prepares each one. My slice seemed too wet, but maybe I was grumpy because we arrived when the sun was up, and by the time we had our pies, it was 9pm.

Sorry, but definitely not worth more than a thirty minute wait. 2 hours? Please.

Eric Elms

Rebecca and I share an art studio we nicknamed the “Secret Society.” It’s in Williamsburg above the Roebling Tea Room and there has been a great array of artists and friends populating our floor since we moved in two years ago.

One of my old bosses at the New Yorker (when I was an intern) used to be next door, the boys from Mishka NYC were down the hall, and now Eric Elms is across from us.

I joke that Eric is a modern day Oldenburg. His new kick seems to be building these oversize installations, be they sneakers with huge laces, giant joints, or pop phrases in wood and fabric for clients like Stussy and Nike. Every so often, he’ll come by our studio and enlist Rebecca to sew something. The photo below is a joint she created per his specifications.

He’s having a party to open the installation at the old Nike ID store in Nolita this Wednesday. It’s part of (also an old boss) Aaron Rose’s Beautiful Loser project and should be quite a rad eyeful.

I documented Leti’s event a bit with my digital camera, but nothing compares to having a professional set up a DIY photo booth in the basement. There are more photos on James’ new blog and flickr. Here are some of my favorites with more after the jump.

White Heat

My friend Leti had a “White Diamonds” themed birthday party last night at Greenpoint’s The Diamond with champagne and dinner at Paloma. Glowsticks, black lights, dancing, all white treats (cupcakes, candy, donuts) white decorations, and a “photo booth” courtesy of James. I will post his cute photos as soon as they’re in my mitts, but in the meantime here are a few of mine:
